Since 1996, California has allowed the personal use of medical marijuana. Doctors wishing to administer cannabis to their seriously ill patients are allowed to do so but there are restrictions. It should be kept in mind that the benefits of cannabis may not be the right treatment for every patient. Also, not every physician in the state is willing to use this type of treatment nor are they legally required to do so. Once a physician and patient have elected to use cannabis as a treatment option, only legal medical marijuana despensaries may be used to obtain supplies. Please remember that the Compassionate Use Act, alternately known as Proposition 215, does not legalize or condone any nonmedical use of cannabis. It also requires those using the substance under its auspices to be seriously ill as determined by a doctor, specifically mentioning conditions such as cancer, chronic pain, anorexia and AIDS.
